3 tips for encouraging innovation by changing the physical work environment

When people think of innovation, companies like Google and Apple often immediately come to mind. These technology based companies consistently push the boundaries of innovation by offering products and services that “wow” the industry. Many organizations have tried to mimic these innovative cultures, but are often met with limited success.

While there are individual differences and cultural aspects that play into an organization’s tendency to be innovative, IDEO’s CEO Tim Brown argues that an organization can foster a more creative environment by changing the physical environment. He suggests:

• Open up the space so people are more accessible. Employees who can see one another might be more inclined to share ideas.

•  A new paint color might freshen up the office and take away the “dreary and corporate” feel.

•  Design the space so it’s more encouraging of activities such as brainstorming. [/note]
