Body language mistakes made in interviews
When interviewing for a new job, it is important to pay attention to your verbal as well as nonverbal cues. Poor body language could cost you your dream job. A recent Business Insider article highlighted some key nonverbal cues interviewers find most off-putting and ways to fix them.
- Bad posture. Do not slouch. Rather, sit or stand tall with neck elongated, shoulders aligned, and chest slightly protruding.
- Bad handshake. Do not grip the interviewer’s hand and palm it down. Rather, shake naturally with thumbs in an upward position with two to three pumps up and down.
- Sweaty palms. Sweaty palms appear insecure. Always rinse hands in cold water before an interview.
- Lack of eye contact. Lack of eye contact can show insecurity as well. Give the appropriate amount of eye contact.
- Fidgeting. Avoid playing with your hair, touching your face, or any other kind of fidgeting. This is a distraction to the interviewer.
- Appearing distracted or uninterested. Avoid shifting around in your chair or crossing and uncrossing your legs. This gives the appearance that you are bored. Instead, lean slightly forward, tilt your head, and nod occasionally.
- Failing to smile. Smiling exudes confidence, openness, warmth, and energy. Failing to smile can make someone appear grim.
