How leaders build trust
Trust is crucial in the professional world. Honest leaders do not have to discuss trust. Rather, trust is earned through their actions. A recent Business Insider article highlighted several characteristics of trustworthy and honest leaders that is worth emulating:
- Transparency. A leader who has earned the trust of his or her colleagues conveys information clearly and accurately. When employees perceive that their manager is not hiding anything, they will be more likely to trust.
- Selflessness. An honest leader will put others first. When managers put themselves on the line for their employees, this builds a solid foundation for a trusting relationship.
- Credit. Honest and trustworthy leaders give credit when credit is due. Trust is built when managers let others shine. They acknowledge and highlight the accomplishments of their team rather than simply hogging the spotlight for themselves. Giving credit acknowledges that managers truly value and appreciate their employees.
Trust is not built overnight. It is earned. Once trust is earned, it is important to not take it for granted and to continue to build it over time. This will create a positive relationship with managers and employees and ultimately, a healthier work environment.
