Leadership books that never go out of style (2012 edition): Part IV
I have found some important insights and observations in Authentic Leadership, by Bill George. He describes an authentic leader as someone who has integrity, is committed to building enduring organizations, and who has a deep sense of purpose and stays true to their core values. Part of this sense of purpose is recognizing the importance of their service to society. The author focuses on the personal development of the leader as a centered person, rather than outlining ways to develop specific leadership skills. Many of his ideas and suggestions sound like building the foundation of a not-for-profit organization, but he is actually focused on the for-profit business world. So, for example, he emphasizes the importance of a central and guiding mission for a company in order to inspire employees to create innovative products and provide superior customer service. The book challenges potential leaders to develop five central qualities and habits:
- • Understand their purpose
- • Practice solid values
- • Lead with the heart
- • Establish connected relationships
- • Demonstrate self-discipline
If you want a holistic perspective on leadership, and one that challenges you to reflect on your values and motivation in the business world, you will find this to be an interesting read.
I would be interested in your thoughts on the importance of authenticity, mission, values and purpose in a leadership role.
