How to let go of a goal & still feel good

Not all goals are worth keeping. Some goals simply do not fit your life anymore. You do not need to feel bad about yourself for not keeping such goals. How can you let go of a long-term goal with your self-esteem still being intact? Fast Company recently published an article that highlights ways to let go of a goal without feeling bad about yourself:

  1. Decide the goal is not yours. Think about why you originally set the goal. Goals should be self-driven and should matter to you. Goals should not be created from others’ expectations of you.
  2. Put it on the someday list. Put aside your goal for a later time. The goal may not be appropriate for this moment of time but things may change in the future.
  3. Consider what you would tell a friend. People are generally harder on themselves than on others. Consider what you would tell your best friend if he or she was in the same position and tell yourself the same thing.
  4. Think small. Consider letting go of big goals in favor of smaller, more feasible goals.
  5. Focus on processes. Rather than focus only on a goal itself, focus on the processes or behaviors. Behaviors are what ultimately get goals accomplished.
