One common phrase in the workplace is, “This is how we’ve always done it.” If you’re stuck in an office culture in which this phrase is common, it can be frustrating. The company may be resistant to change. Suggestions for improvement may be overlooked or ignored. In a recent article, Forbes offers some ways to effectively present your thoughts and ideas to get the gears of change moving.

  1. Set an appointment. Do not spring your ideas to your superiors without warning. Schedule a meeting to discuss your thoughts. This gives management a heads up. Be considerate of timing as you do so. Ensure that you are not scheduling this appointment during the busiest times.
  2. Come prepared. Be ready to discuss all of the minor details of your proposed idea. Show that your idea is well thought out and well researched. Explain the benefits of the change, and why this change is the best alternative.
  3. Be ready to be met with resistance. Be prepared to deal with apprehension and hesitancy. Speak in terms of improvement, rather than change.
  4. Follow up. Follow up with management in a week or two. This time will provide them think about your ideas.
  5. Stay positive. Even if your idea is shot down, stay positive. Find other outlets in which you can channel your innovative energy.
