The keys to being an effective communicator
Effective communication is crucial in the workplace. However, it is also important in life. But how does one become a good communicator? While it may not come natural to all of us, the good news is that with practice, we can all become effective communicators.
Below are the necessary qualities of effective communicators:
- • They listen. Effective communicators do not try to think of appropriate responses when others are listening. They give their undivided attention to the speaker to ensure that they do not miss a word.
- • They can relate to others. Effective communicators have an understanding of their audience. They tailor their message to the specific listener.
- • They simplify the complex. Effective communicators make even the most complicated and convoluted material clear and concrete for the audience. They break it up information into smaller pieces.
- • They know when to speak up. Effective communicators know when it is time to voice their opinion rather that sweep something under the rug.
- • They are available. Effective communicators continuously make themselves available. They ensure that all are able to weigh-in with their individual perspectives.
- • They practice confidence. Effective communicators are confident in what they are discussing. They speak loudly and clearly to their audience.
- • They are specific. Effective communicators are clear and concise. They do not allow room for miscommunication, nor do they beat around the bush.
- • They focus on their interactions. Effective communicators do not get distracted in their interactions. They focus only on the interaction and audience currently in front of them.
- • They ask questions. Effective communicators use questions to fill any confusion gaps. They do not make assumptions.
- • They recognize non-verbal cues. Effective communicators can read non-verbal signals like facial expressions, posture, and eye contact to better understand their audience.
Try integrating some of these practices into your communication. After all, practice makes perfect!
