The six people you need in your corner

Teamwork

One of the most important developmental areas for leaders and emerging leaders alike is relationships and teaming. In fact, the people surrounding you can help you in a multitude of ways from serving as a champion for your ideas to actually leveraging their respective skillsets to fill a gap in your leadership ability.

Who are the types of people you should have in your corner? Forbes recently focused on the six prominent types. One of which is The Example:

This is your mentor, you hero, your North Star. This is the person who you seek to emulate. This is your guiding entity, someone whose presence acts as a constant reminder that you, too, can do amazing things. You want to make this person proud. This is the voice of true authority.

Other core types of people include:

  • The Instigator: The voice of inspiration
  • The Cheerleader: The voice of motivation
  • The Doubter: The voice of reason
  • The Taskmaster: The voice of progress
  • The Connector: The voice of cooperation and community

Developing such a team to corner you can be facilitated in a variety of ways. For example, one could conduct a social network analysis and leverage strategies, such as trust and rapport building. Nonetheless, the best practice is to engage in a multi-model leadership development program, like The Leadership Advantage™. Such programs are designed to develop a variety of leadership skills— including your relationship and teaming skills—via hands-on learning opportunities.
